Oh, the ep was so awesome.  I was full of squee from beginning to end.

I love nerdy Henry Winchester!  He belongs to a supernatural nerd society!! He's essentially a Watcher!!! HOW CAN I JOIN.

As soon as they said "Albert Magnus" I was like GREAT MEDIEVAL ALCHEMIST Albertus Magnus? Why yes.

And of course he didn't realize that Abaddon would destroy them. That's sad.

Inasmuch as I was ALL SQUEE ALL THE TIME for the whole episode, I had three quibbles:

1.  Apparently the Winchesters produce parthenogenetically, with little Winchesters springing fully formed from the loins of their fathers, and their fathers' fathers, and their fathers' fathers' fathers, ad astra.  Grrr.  SPN, you know better than this.

2.  Apparently, the Men of Letters had concentrated all their eggs in one secret room in Illinois.  Highly unlikely!!!!

3. And Sam and Dean didn't think, oh, secret branch of enochian knowledge, really?   We don't know any ANGELS TO ASK ABOUT THIS????  Apparently John Dee was a Winchester?   Actually I'm full of glee about this.

I love love love this new storyline.  The potential that Angels were manipulating the Men of Letters is astronomical -- agreed?  Down to the fact that they think of Hunters as "Apes"??  I wonder how many of them have been Vessels?  I am completely full of thoughts.

Plus what are the odds that the Campbells didn't know about them?  Seems very likely they did, right?

....

Okay, I've spent the last two hours researching the sigil that Henry wears.   it seemed very familiar to me. I want you all to know that I already scoured John's journal and it is not in there.  Too bad.  It does resemble Azazel's sigil, if you kind of  unravel it, right?

So, it is called the Unicursal Hexagram.  It is strongly associated with Aleister Crowley, the Golden Dawn, and Thelema.  As a sigil, it's derived from the kabbalistic Tree of Life.   Go here to learn more about the unicursal hexagram:
http://hermetic.com/jones/on-the-formulae-of-the-unicursal-hexagram.html --this is a very good link if you link planetary symbology.
And, If you like this stuff at all, I do recommend  John Martineau's "a Little Book of Coincidence in the solar system" which shows how these stars are replicated in the orbits of the planets.

Basically it means that these guys are kabbalistic; essentially they are Scientific Magicians.  [i need the twinkly font]  aaand, yeah, that was made overt with the reference to Albertus Magnus.    I freaking love this stuff (except for the too much math). Holy crap, you guys know I did my diss on Mary Shelley and Frankenstein right????  Supernatural has its claws around MY VERY SOUL.
I don't have have a tattoo, but if I did, it would be the Sign of Hermes, the symbol of the planet Mercury.  I've been using it as a sigil since I was a kid -- so has my husband, and no lie, that's How We Met.
Please, I want that tie tack YESTERDAY.  But now, I know if I wear it, I'll get creepy looks from Crowley disciples.  I'll be like NO NO PLEASE BACK OFF WITH YOUR OFFERS OF SEX MAGICK I'M A MAN OF LETTERS.  Bwa ha ha.

probably I should do more today than just geek out about last night's ep.  Okay. trying to go take a walk now!!!  the wind sure is blowing though....

I am extremely excited by the idea of a bunch of humans being able to work Enochian spells, and I love the idea of a watcher-type group.

Though, seriously, are they all Men of Letters?

This show is so dude-centric, my eyes are sore from rolling.

And I loved how both Sam and Dean come from both sides the brains and the brawn.

Also, Abbadon! Wasn't she fabulous?

what to do you think -- will Abaddon have wiped out all the Men of Letters -- or just that local Kansas cell?????

I hope you follow Monicawoe if you love the Enochian. She just translated all the Enochian we've heard in the series so far back at her lj. :D

Hooray for scientific magicians!

That Book of Coincidence looks AWESOME

Hee! I had EXACTLY the same thought. Plus my best friend would smack me. He haaaaates Crowley.

LOL yes well. There's also the whole bloodlines going back to Cain and Abel which doesn't quite work what with...you know the death of Abel and all. Uh.

I griped about that Cain and Abel thing, but people shot me down. I hate it when they get things WRONG. I'm all for artistic license... but I also prefer it when they do it by the book. That Golem episode just blew me out of the water, it was so amazing. That's my man Ben Edlund who wrote that. Freakin Undead Nazi Necromancers vs. Rabbi Hal Linden!!! It don't get better than that. Plus that golem was better than I could even have hoped... and yes, I am a Frankenstein Scholar!!@@$$##!!!!!

I don't love Crowley either. I have the Thoth deck and that's about as far as my involvement with his work goes. :)

OMG the Crowley deck SUCKS! somebody got it for me and it's like...what do I do with this : /
I always read cards by looking at the actual images on the card, not by memorization, and Crowley's are just so damn ugly I don't even want to look at them!

true. I don't even use it. It just appeals to my intellectual side to have it around, to kind of look at the work that was put into it. I guess I also bought it so long ago, in the 80s before the kind of huge explosion of various decks that have become available.

My favorite deck, which I love, is the Motherpeace deck. Have you ever seen it? It's round, and it is ALL WOMEN. It really worked well for me in the days when I did a lot of Tarot.

I'll look it up! I've never heard of Motherpeace. My favorite one is the cosmic deck, which I always reffered to as the ST:TNG deck because so many of the people look like the TNG cast, lol. I swear Deanna Troi is in there like 4 times.
