If you ever feel like fanfic isn't getting the respect it deserves, here is a little list I came up with.
Please share your own ideas and examples in the comments!

CHAUCER'S CANTERBURY TALES.  Chaucer used a number of pre-existing sources for his tales, including Bocaccio's Decameron.

many of SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYS.   Shakespeare famously used existing stories for many of his plays -- like Macbeth or Hamlet, and of course, used historical figures (he wrote  REAL PERSON FIC!!!) to base his stories on.

MILTON'S PARADISE LOST. Anyone who thinks Milton came up with the character of Lucifer, or Adam and Eve, on his own, has clearly not read some pretty important literature that is at least a couple thousand years older than Milton.

Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN.  Mary Shelley was influenced by Paradise Lost in her conception of the Creature, which she acknowledges in the epigraph:
"Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay
To mould me Man, did I solicit thee
From darkness to promote me?"

Paradise Lost, X, 743-45
Or, in one of my favorite quotes from the book, the Creature says: "I ought to have been thine Adam, but am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed."

Percy Shelley's PROMETHEUS UNBOUND -- a fixit story of an ancient myth.  :D

During the 19th century, it was popular to put on Shakespeare's plays in "Bowdlerized" versions, that is, Bowdler and folks like him rewrote the plays to avoid death story endings, and put the finishing touches on the curtains.  :D

SHERLOCK.  Publishing fanfic about Sherlock Holmes is a long and storied tradition.

OZ.  After L Frank Baum finished writing Oz books, other folks took it up, including primarily Ruth Plumly Thompson.

FAIRY TALES.  The Grimms obviously collected existing stories, whereas Hans Christian Anderson,  Charles Perrault, among others, stepped into the genre to write fairy stories.  According to the wikipedia article on fairy tales, salon women of Paris began the popular tradition of composing Fairy Tales.  My favorite is La Belle et La Bête, "redacted" by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont.

Plus every Disney movie of a fairy tale.
And the many movie versions of Shakespeare's plays.
As critics have pointed out, every performance of a play is its own, unique work of art - as is every time a literary work is read.

WIDE SARGASSO SEA by Jean Rhys -- a retelling of the story of Jane Eyre from the madwoman in the attic's point of view.

O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? -- a famous retelling of the Odyssey.

Plus the way Star Wars and Star Trek books become canon.  Or the way that remakes retell the original story.  Or any time a movie is based on a  book. Or the way any book series with multiple authors share in interpreting a community canon.   Or the way that The Doctor becomes a new person every so often... as does James Bond....  in fact the Doctor is a kind of fusion of Holmes and Bond. :)

The way that Fantasy, as a genre, owes its existence to Tolkien.  And the way that Tolkien himself was writing mythological backstory to support his invented languages that were love affairs with Celtic and Nordic languages and mythologies.

All these things have in common, that a work of art is reacting to a pre-existing set of ideas.

Being a ballad singer and folk singer, it's also true that originality doesn't mean much to me.  With music, what I like to hear is different singers performing music -- whether it is different covers of the same song, or different songs in a related genre, or whatever!  With ballads, there are dozens of variants, and while people are interested in the "ur-text"  or what is oldest, that's not the only criterion of interest.

Fanfic rocks!  for so many reasons!!!  Proud to be part of a long tradition including many of my favorite literary authors.

Kalliel brings up a great point in her meta: that Supernatural has been destabilizing the human/monster binary since day one.
This is so true!  I'm not sure I can add to her essay, but I guess I'd like to try to get my own heart out there as well.

No spoilers beyond 10.02 please!

Watch Chris Evans get drenched in ice water! He is ADORBS.
"When I bring awareness to a charity, I prefer a more formal setting."  LOLZ!
The countdown has started for Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan.  Oh yes, the world is watching.  Especially for Sebastian.  lolololol.
PS: Snowpiercer!!!  Not for everyone, but wow, I liked it a lot. I think it's pretty clever of Chris to take a very subtle opportunity to shout out his fantastic movie that got SO UNFAIRLY SHAFTED in distribution.
I don't watch dramas, so I did not recognize Octavia Spencer as the Oscar winner from The Help.  But she was really good in Snowpiercer too.
The Cumberbatch one is awesome too!  Share which ones you like most!

Chris Evan's quote tattoo is by Eckhart Tolle:
“When you lose touch with inner stillness,
you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch
with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.”  -- thanks Tsuki no bara!  :)

Acafan moment: bizarre application of famous Blake quote to fanfic as a phenomenon:
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”
The source material is like the cavern... have you ever watched a piece of fantastic (or mediocre) source material countless times, till you know it by heart .... and then spent hours riffing on it in fic, or reading other people riffing on it.  In fanfic, canon is opened out and becomes Infinite.  5,686 stories about Bucky and Steve on AO3, and counting.... many exploring the same tropes, but so many people peering through the narrow chinks, searching for something new...  it's really kind of amazing.

today's Bucky cosplay thoughts (Halloween related -- sorry, I really plan ahead):
--do I really need a replica M4A1 rifle with attached M203 grenade launcher -- made out of duct tape? or shall I be a gunless version?
-- shouldn't I rig my holsters as a Treat Storage and Deployment System?
-- what candy should I give out? I'm thinking York Peppermint Patties and Hershey Special Dark.  :)
-- does anyone know where to get a bunch of Winter Soldier stickers? or do I have to get Avengers ones?  I want more Bucky, as always.
--Should I make a big "temporary SHIELD headquarters" sign for my house?  Since Husband is going as Tony, this should be Stark Tower, but there's no way.  I guess our tiny rowhouse is a former tenement in Brooklyn: much more believable. :)

PS I went to McDonalds, ordered a Happy Meal, asked for a miniature Barbie instead of a car, and made the Barbie into Peggy Carter by giving her a hair cut and a dress made of red duct tape.  Bucky is SO SUSPICIOUS.  did you guys know that Peggy is getting her own show FOR REALS??? so exciting!

Shippping Joan/Sherlock..... well, I guess I do ship them for a certain value of shipping.  :P  I mean, I think the show has done a fantastic job of creating their relationship as being based on mutual trust and respect and the fact that they just *get* each other. And are willing to fight each other to make it clear that respect must be paramount.   So I certainly do ship the hell out of that.

A few weeks ago  there was another, rather well-argued post on heavy meta  that I couldn't bring myself to really agree with about sexism on Show.   I've been dwelling on it, but this morning I tried to make a comment on a friend's journal about a related matter and my comment got way too long and here it is.  :)

This meta brought to you by Dr. Fannishliss and her dissertation, ie the hobbyhorse I just keep getting back on.

I come at this from a perspective of many years spent as an academic feminist. On the one hand, the idea of defining a woman entirely by her family is one thing feminism has tried to combat. But the other side of that same coin is the idea that any heroic person has to cut off their connections to family in order to fully individuate. So that's what I want to talk about (yes the same old academic feminist problem that has haunted me since 1994!).

genre: poem! also, meta

Quotidian

We might dream of heroism —
something more heroic than
stitching together a seam that was torn,
slathering a piece of raisin bread with butter,
welcoming home a mate after a long day's work,
wiping the tears from a child's face,
surprising someone with their favorite pie.

Dreaming, I've carried my child on my back from the ruins of an apocalyptic city.
But I have carried my child on my back.

Dreaming, I've torn a man's head from his shoulders when he tried to take my water.
But I have answered back when I disagreed.

Dreaming, I've stabbed a monster a hundred times until it stopped moving.
But I have used that same knife to skin a deer, and all winter we ate.

Ulysses fought his way home to Penelope's hearth.

The one I love
never tortured,
is not an assassin,
never ended the world.
His nightmares are when our boy
runs out into the street without looking.

What hero would make a home in loving arms?
A real one, a lucky one, every day.

to all my fannish and feminist friends, I'd love to know how you read this poem. All comments are welcome!

I set quite a few challenges for myself in 2009 and made a big leap forward in terms of numbers of stories and words posted.
Thanks so very much to all who commented!  I know some people say "you write for yourself" but personally, I write to communicate my ideas to others.  I am honestly very interested in whatever you have to say, be it positive or politely negative.

72 pieces, includings stories, ficlets, poems and drabbles  (77,000 words)

plus Seven Substantial Metas.

And a Song!! :)

LOVE IS COMMENTS.  :)

I honestly don't know whether I'll write this much again in 2010, as my goal is to do more personal writing in my private journal, which has fallen by the wayside in recent years, and to write more poems and songs about real life.

I'll also be posting that roundup meme.  Cheers to you, flist!  Happy New Year!
