Bucky hand etc
Oct. 3rd, 2014 08:57 amthis thing is long, but watch the last minute of it. WOW. Chris Evans is a fine athlete! I mean, you know by looking at him that he is buff, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he can spin and kick and fly through the air. WOW. Raw footage of Stan and Evans and it is SUPER IMPRESSIVE. So the reason that Bucky looks so much taller in that fight is that Steve uses a very wide stance to launch his kicks and jumps from. WOW. It is a three-wow comment.
also a nice interview with Chris that I read yesterday.

I think I might buy the holster from Think Geek. It is the last piece I need. I guess I'll see how my homemade one turns out first. Still: covet.
Here is my Bucky Hand. I am pretty excited.( pics under cut )
dog tags questions
Sep. 12th, 2014 07:31 amAnyway, first question first: Does Steve have a next of kin?
My headcanon is that Bucky puts Steve as his next of kin on his tags. I think canon is unclear but it seems like by the time Bucky joins up his parents are deceased and his sisters have been sent to Indiana to be raised by relatives. Any canon on any of this would be appreciated, but of course these origins have been retold a number of times, so I'm just trying to piece together what makes sense for MCU.
Bucky's tag is ready to go with his full serial number 32557038 and his tetanus date 42 43. :)
Steve's tag looks lonely and forelorn with no next of kin -- but with Bucky already joined up, I don't think he has one. ):
Steve's serial number is given on screen in Winter Soldier!! Pierce and Sitwell show a mugshot of Steve when he is on the run with a long number under his name, which I hope is his serial number. It should begin 12 if he voluntarily enlisted in New York, but... anyway Bucky's number shows that he was drafted.
Second question: I looked up best guesses for Steve's address in Brooklyn, but 166 Montague Street is way too fancy. I just wanted to move it slightly to a less fancy building. I'm going with 148 Montague Street just a bit down the block. Any Brooklyn dwellers want to weigh in?
And yes, I have Bucky wearing one of Steve's tags. I don't think Steve would have confused their tags during the actual war... but in my headcanon, Steve gives Bucky his old tags back when he comes in from the cold (post Winter Soldier) and they trade their tags then. :D
"When I bring awareness to a charity, I prefer a more formal setting." LOLZ!
The countdown has started for Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, Frank Grillo, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan. Oh yes, the world is watching. Especially for Sebastian. lolololol.
PS: Snowpiercer!!! Not for everyone, but wow, I liked it a lot. I think it's pretty clever of Chris to take a very subtle opportunity to shout out his fantastic movie that got SO UNFAIRLY SHAFTED in distribution.
I don't watch dramas, so I did not recognize Octavia Spencer as the Oscar winner from The Help. But she was really good in Snowpiercer too.
The Cumberbatch one is awesome too! Share which ones you like most!
Chris Evan's quote tattoo is by Eckhart Tolle:
“When you lose touch with inner stillness,
you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch
with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.” -- thanks Tsuki no bara! :)
Acafan moment: bizarre application of famous Blake quote to fanfic as a phenomenon:
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”
The source material is like the cavern... have you ever watched a piece of fantastic (or mediocre) source material countless times, till you know it by heart .... and then spent hours riffing on it in fic, or reading other people riffing on it. In fanfic, canon is opened out and becomes Infinite. 5,686 stories about Bucky and Steve on AO3, and counting.... many exploring the same tropes, but so many people peering through the narrow chinks, searching for something new... it's really kind of amazing.
today's Bucky cosplay thoughts (Halloween related -- sorry, I really plan ahead):
--do I really need a replica M4A1 rifle with attached M203 grenade launcher -- made out of duct tape? or shall I be a gunless version?
-- shouldn't I rig my holsters as a Treat Storage and Deployment System?
-- what candy should I give out? I'm thinking York Peppermint Patties and Hershey Special Dark. :)
-- does anyone know where to get a bunch of Winter Soldier stickers? or do I have to get Avengers ones? I want more Bucky, as always.
--Should I make a big "temporary SHIELD headquarters" sign for my house? Since Husband is going as Tony, this should be Stark Tower, but there's no way. I guess our tiny rowhouse is a former tenement in Brooklyn: much more believable. :)
PS I went to McDonalds, ordered a Happy Meal, asked for a miniature Barbie instead of a car, and made the Barbie into Peggy Carter by giving her a hair cut and a dress made of red duct tape. Bucky is SO SUSPICIOUS. did you guys know that Peggy is getting her own show FOR REALS??? so exciting!
two movies with Chris Evans :)
Aug. 10th, 2014 12:07 amSo I couldn't take it any longer, I went to my used DVD store and bought Captain America: The First Avenger, Push, and The Losers.
(I am really looking forward to Captain America: The Winter Soldier coming out soon on DVD, and I hope that Snowpiercer will also have a DVD release in October 2014???)
The first Cap movie is by far not my favorite. The stuff with the Red Skull puts me to sleep (literally). Not enough Bucky. However, I had to see more Peggy, more Steve, and of course more Bucky Barnes!! All the stuff that is directly about Steve is very watchable... but somehow the other parts seem really dumb. :(
I will probably have to get the Avengers movie as well (anyone have a copy they want to sell?)
After seeing Snowpiercer, which ROCKED, I wanted more Chris Evans, so I went after these two other movies.
Spoilers below! but I'll try not to give too much away if you haven't seen them.
In sum, if you like Chris in action films, you will like these movies. In Push, he does more scowling if you prefer sad Chris, whereas in The Losers he cracks the wise as fun Chris, plus wearing great t shirts, all of which I now want.
In other news I bought my Bucky boots today!!! The Winter Soldier is wearing some glam on the feet end.
They are 9 hole pewter Aimilie Dr. Martens. In the pix you cannot see the beautiful glittery finish of the soft pewter suede. of course Bucky will not be wearing the silver satin laces, but regular old black laces. These boots I think will transition easily from my Bucky cosplay to dressy daywear. :D Now Bucky has pants, a jacket, boots, a belt, and still needs a metallic silver lamé glove.... if anyone has one to give or sell, I'd really appreciate it, as lamé gloves that are durable seem super hard to find. Also still need need pads, shoulder harness, and bike gloves. But I'm doing very well for early August!!
cosplay opinions
Jul. 21st, 2014 12:20 pm1. Buy an expensive Bucky jacket that looks awesome.
2. Make a Bucky jacket by adding details made of duct tape.
The expensive Bucky jacket is not versatile for wearing in everyday situations I don't think, since I am not actually a one armed assassin.
Also I do not currently have plans to cosplay any big venues...it's more of an annual Halloween thing.
Duct tape is not bad. We built a working K9 out of duct tape a year or so ago.
Why Be Bucky
Jul. 10th, 2014 06:51 amSo currently I am completely all about Bucky. Prior, I was all about Loki for a good while (I'm hoping to write a novel for NaNoWriMo this year, going back to the mythological roots of Loki and casting him as a force in the modern world--we'll see how it goes. Kind of a sequel to my faerie novel, which is pretty cool actually). And of course if you read this journal at all you must know about my love affairs with Nine (who, with Ten, is a sad, dark Doctor) and Dean Winchester (poster boy for sad, bad boy Heroes everywhere).
I am planning on cosplaying Bucky for Halloween. Part of it I guess is just the incredibly striking visual image of his metal arm and his black on black on black armor. In real life I am not into guns (theoretically I would like to know how to shoot in order to hunt for game; deerhunting is a big part of the culture I grew up in -- but I've never really taken action to learn to shoot and have only actually gone hunting once.) So I'm experiencing some cognitive dissonance with my own desire to dress as Bucky, because he is bristling with guns.
I really love Bucky's emo face. I love his hair that falls down in a messy curtain around his sad, confused, angry eyes. I love his killer stride. And I could watch the big hand-to-hand fight a million more times, great fight choreography is really beautiful to me, and the choreography throughout CATWS is stellar. I think of Bucky as a dancer and I see the Winter Soldier as seeing his fight with Steve as a dance. (It's interesting, because he dances beautifully with Nick Fury's suv as well, but not so much with Natasha. He takes a lot of shots at her but doesn't engage in hand to hand, even though she jumps onto his head.)( more rambles about Bucky )
Speak Out with your Geek Out
Sep. 12th, 2011 10:37 amThis is apparently Geek Week.
I have plenty of Geek to speak out with! So much I don't know where to start.
Well, I guess I will start with now, and work backwards:
Right now, I am 43 years old. I live in a house that is named in Elvish with my son and my husband who is a professional stage actor by night. I am a professional musician and music teacher and I run an arts non-profit. Having devoted our lives to the arts world does make us Geeks since we are not stars and never will be. Doesn't stop us from being who we are though!
Out of the three of us I am the most fannish. I'm currently obsessed with Supernatural and Doctor Who and the many, many films of Christopher Eccleston (dude, that guy has a resume!!) And as you can tell, I spend a lot of time online reading and writing fanfic. :D Prior to this spring, All of my fanfic was in Supernatural, whereas, this summer, it has all been for Doctor Who. I love the New Who, Rose shipper fandom I've fallen into -- what a lovely group of people y'all are!
Here is a link to my Fanfic writing meme, where I gave links to my fic roundups by year.
And here is my newly updated Doctor Who masterlist -- 22 pieces this summer, and counting!
I love to go deep into fannish things. Last summer we rented the DVDs of Kolchak the Night Stalker, my favorite TV show from when I was little, and I cosplayed as Kolchak even though very few people have ever even heard of him (he was one of Chris Carter's inspirations for the XFiles).
This spring, after the Supernatural season finale, I dove into Doctor Who after a 25 year hiatus!! I was a Whovian in the 80s and then watched the Eccleston season a couple years ago, but I liked Chris so well that I couldn't bring myself to watch Parting of the Ways. !!! So we finally dove back in this spring, and have since watched all the New Who, plus, going back to watch the old Who that is available to check out from our public library. Luckily my son likes Who, as does my husband, and we all went to see Fright Night as a family, which, indeed was really fun.
I have my brown pin stripe suit, converse, and several awesome ties ready to go. I've convinced myself to buy the Sonic screwdriver. And I'll probably try and find the specs as well! even though I actually wear glasses, I guess I'll wear my contacts and fake specs. \o/ because that is how geeky I am.
Here is the place to go for the geekiest things: thinkgeek.com I think in fact that I will go there right now and buy my screwdriver. :D My action figures of Nine, Rose, and Ten seem psyched by the idea. :)
ONOZ! Quandary! Get the more expensive one that makes the real noise, and is a pen, or get the cheaper one that is a working led flashlight???? I do like the noise, but I also like that it is a real flashlight. (I don't care about the pen)
Okay, now I'm updating my masterlists.... so this is posting. :)
who things
Aug. 25th, 2011 08:18 pm*Shallow Grave (Channel 4/PolyGram, 1994) wr. John Hodge, dir. Danny Boyle, With Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, Ewan McGregor, Ken Stott. I did own this on VHS back in the day, but it went away somehow. Based on my complete love for Strumpet, I am eager to see this again.
*The Invisible Circus (2001) dir. Adam Brooks, with Cameron Diaz, Jordana Brewster, Christopher Eccleston and Blythe Danner. Based on Jennifer Egan's best-selling novel.
*The Revenger's Tragedy (2003) dir. Alex Cox, adapt. Frank Cottrell Boyce. with Christopher Eccleston, Derek Jacobi, Eddie Izzard. Based on The Revenger's Tragedy attrib. Thomas Middleton 1606. Sdtrk. by Chumbawamba!
--I got all three of these from a company called Amazing Media for a total of $15 including shipping. :)
~~ I went to a thrift store and found the perfect blue shirt to go with my brown pinstriped suit. Also three ties of varying Time Lordiness. :) Now all I need is a sonic screwdriver and nerdy specs (my actual specs are not black rimmed). I found out that there is a company called Magnoli Clothiers that actually tailors costume items -- you can get the brown and blue swirly tie for $60! A nice resource for folks who care about precision. My $2 ties are fine by me. :)
~~ I'm working on a long story right now. I wonder if folks have a preference about reading WIPs by chapter or if they prefer the finished piece? I guess I am happier trying to finish the piece and publish it when it's done?
who things; drabbling
Aug. 10th, 2011 10:07 am~~ Still pondering the surreal work of Marc Platt. Both Time's Crucible and Lungbarrow planted extremely fruitful ideas in my head. Such crazy worldbuilding!! I love it.
~~ my Brown Pinstripe Suit arrived in the mail from ebay yesterday, and it fit!!! I'm so excited. Now I have to buy Converse. :D :D :D I really don't know why I love crossdressing so much. I am IN NO WAY built like David Tennant. i'm 5'1" and I probably outweigh him! I love when Donna says " how are you so skinny -- this wouldn't fit a rat!" Luckily my new jacket fits me across the shoulders and even the bust. :D
~~ Blue Skies drabblethon. ( thinky about drabbling )
What a long week with LJ being down. I hope the DDoS attackers are traced and prosecuted.
We finished watching Tom Baker and Mary Tamm in the Key to Time season. It was good. It was a really interesting experience going back to watching Tom Baker. Four is so clearly the model for our current doctors (obviously he would be)... but at the same time, he is so much more innocent before the Time War. The dark side just isn't there... at least I didn't see it. He's a hero, plain and simple.
We just started watching season 6 (the first half), which we purchased from itunes for a very reasonable fee. The first ep has a very scary monster, good interactions between the companions, and an awesome guest star that we really love. O hai thar Crowley!!
I really wish I could cosplay as Ten for Halloween this year. I am no stringbean however!!! Last year I went as Kolchak the Night Stalker. I was not widely recognized! My offspring says he would wear a K-9 shirt. :)
My Nine and Rose figures arrived, to join Ten. They have not had any adventures yet. They are still arguing about who gets to stand closest to Rose. She is being very mature about it. The Nine figure is excellent and bears a very good likeness to Chris. Also, pink-shirted Rose looks great and is ready for action! Nine is really not interested in sharing his sonic, and Ten is a little put out. I think he is pouting and hopes it will earn him sympathies from Rose.
One final thing to recommend: we bought the three Doctor/Rose adventures read by David Tennant off of itunes. They were expensive but Well Worth the Money!! We listened to them all while driving on vacation. Tennant is a superb reader, as you might guess. He narrates in his own Scottish accent, which is adorable, but then he also does voices for all the characters with their own accents--including the Doctor, of course!! His soft, femme imitation of Rose is just so awesome!! For most fans I think the Stone Rose is the favorite, but honestly, I thought all three were great.
The Stone Rose involves a lot of time travel and partially takes place in Roman days.
The Resurrection Casket is a retelling of Treasure Island, in Space, with Robots, and has several great twists.
The Feast of the Drowned is creepy, features awesome heroics, and takes place in modern-day London.
It is nice to know that the Boys are back in Vancouver and working on Supernatural (I still love it even though I am taking the summer off. It's just like my semester in England!!)
