We went to see Baby Driver.  Here is the trailer.

It has a weird name but we took a chance.

WE LOVED IT!!

We read a few reviews and realized that we were the ideal viewers for this movie.

1. We love movies where people orchestrate their lives to a soundtrack only they can hear.
2.  We love to watch wild car chases (especially where there is a lot of drifting).
3.  We LOVE heist films.
4.  We love criminals who secretly have a heart of gold.
5.  Kevin Spacey is ideal in this film.
6.  Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and to a lesser extent, Jon Bernthal (the Punisher) are fantastic.  (Bernthal does a great job but he has a pretty small role).
7.  the main ladies of the movie do a good job with what they are given. plays a scary gun moll named Darling.  She is the mate of Jon Hamm, who plays Buddy.  Imagine sexier versions of the lovers in Pulp Fiction, and that is the general vibe of these two.
8.  the main character is played with charming reserve by Ansel Elgort.  He was the boy in The Fault in Our Stars, which is a movie I would never go see in a thousand years.... but he did a great job in this film.
9.  The ending/resolution of this film is superb.   LOVED IT.
10.  Damn fine cups of coffee.

The plot is that a boy who was orphaned in a car wreck grows up to become the very best get away driver ever. He "owes" a large debt to Kevin Spacey, who orchestrates heists around Baby's ability to get away.  Baby always has his ipod playing in his ears because he has severe tinnitus from the car wreck.  He also makes cassettes at home by remixing recordings of things people say to him.

Here are some of my favorite songs from the film.
#1. "was he slow?" by Kid Koala.  this is from Baby remixing someone's question (i think it was Jon Bernthal) and Kevin Spacey's reply.  it is somewhat offensive but also, a terrific remix of spoken word.  Remixing spoken word is one of my top favorite things and this is an excellent piece.

#2. "Harlem Shuffle" by Bob and Earl.  This is an unforgettable piece which you probably already know, used to perfect effect in the movie.  We have been singing it non-stop for days.  The trumpet blast which opens the song, is used by House of Pain (Everlast) in the song, Jump Around.

#3. Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck Quartet.  A classic piece which sets the tone for the type of choreography the movie follows -- a blend of hip hop and classic soul with irresistable rhythm throughout.

#4. Bellbottoms, by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.  I can't believe this was not already my favorite song.  So good!  Like a perfect blend of 70s heavy metal and disco and some kid of Beastie Boys style voiceover.  Wow!!

There are already several youtube playlists of the whole soundtrack. :)

The title of the film is from an old Simon and Garfunkel song which is included over the end credits.   The lead character, Baby, and his new friend Waitress Debra, have a long conversation about how many times their names appear in songs.  Baby wins of course, because there are only two songs about Debora (Lily James), one by T. Rex and one by Beck.  :)

It is just one of those movies that we thoroughly enjoyed. Not everyone would love it as much as we did... but wow. Just so enjoyable, if you don't mind loads of gun violence on top of everything else.

I actually kind of do, which sounds a bit weird. I can't stand it in real life but in cinema and tv - it adds a frisson, you know?

I saw a trailer for this the other day and thought 'nope' - now you have me thinking it might be a good one to go and see after all!

You know, I'm not into a lot of the things you've listed. However, the idea of the main character orchestrating his life to a chosen soundtrack of songs and mixes intrigues me. Your post has made me sort of want to see it! (And I always like Kevin Spacey.) :)
